Samsung doesn't see glasses-free 3D TVs for 5-10 years

Samsung says 3D TVs aren't due anytime soon

Samsung believes glasses-free 3D TV sets will not be a common household item within the next five to ten years because of technical issues that would make them too costly. According to a WSJ report [sub. required], BK Yoon, Samsung Electronics' visual display president, said 3D without glasses is relatively easy to bring to mobile devices, but is a bigger challenger for 3D TVs. Backing Yoon's argument are analysts who say it will take at least five years before glasses-free 3D TVs are sufficiently mainstream.

Competitor Toshiba, meanwhile, showed off the first glasses-free 3D LCD earlier in October. It plans to begin selling these TVs in December in Japan. A 20-inch set will cost the equivalent of $2,900, while a 12-inch version will cost half of that. Both will use parallax barrier approach used in the Nintendo 3DS handheld. Both have low resolutions, however, and are considered experiments.
