Radeon HD 6850, 6870 set to drop October 22

Radeon HD 6850 and 6870 seen coming October 22

AMD's Radeon HD 6000 series should finally get a launch at the end of next week based on slips from multiple outlets. After pushing it back to October 19, the chip designer has reportedly settled on October 22 to launch the Radeon HD 6850 and 6870 as its first hardware. These actually be the 6700 series with the as yet unannounced 6900 series likely becoming the true performance leader, VR-Zone said.

The cards would only be slightly faster at best than an overclocked Radeon HD 5850, but both are conceived as mid-range cards and should not only cost less but consume significantly less power.

Boards based on the new AMD chipsets are believed to already be shipping from their associated manufacturers and would be ready to sell by the 22nd, indicating that AMD plans a "hard launch" where its hardware is available the same day as it's unveiled. Future plans haven't yet crystallized, though the 6900 is likely next followed by mobile versions. Apple already has Mac driver support and may use the desktop or mobile chips in future system updates.
