On sale for 50 percent off today
MiRow, a new application that enables additional media formats, web surfing (including streaming sites such as Hulu), downloads cover art, adds Last.fm support and more for the Mac is on sale for half off its normal $25 price for the remainder of the day today at MUPromo.com.
The program augments Apple's own Front Row interface to allow AVI, MKV and other previously-unsupported formats to play within Front Row, as well as automatically downloads cover art and other metadata for media files. It adds the ability to surf web sites, including a "Top Sites"-like menu interface, and adds support for Last.fm stations, artist bios and more. It also provides weather forecasts and a built-in RSS reader, and allows users when finished to put the Mac to sleep without exiting Front Row.
The software keeps intact all of the original features of Front Row as well, and offers its own iOS device "remote" app ($4) to control Front Row and the extended features provided by MiRow.
Fire Core, the developers who also make the popular ATV Flash hack for the original AppleTVs that offer many of the same features, are planning to expand MiRow's functionality to include Netflix support (as seen on new-generation AppleTVs) later this year.
The MUPromo offer for half of the $25 normal price is only good today, however the product will remain on special at 25 percent off for the following two weeks.

I am serously considering ditching my first-gen AppleTV in favor of the above combination. A bit on the expensive side but way more flexible! If only it were possible to rent iTunes movies and TV shows within FrontRow...
