Over 73% of Android phones running 2.x or later

Nearly three quarters of Android phone on OS 2.x

Google has updated its distribution totals of the various Android OS builds to reveal that 73.8 percent are using some version of Android 2.x. Meant for developers, it shows that the largest portion (40.4 percent) use Android 2.1, while the second most used build of the OS is Android 2.2, at 33.4 percent. There are still 16.4 percent of Android 1.6 users accessing the Market, and 9.7 percent have Android 1.5.

The trend is a good one for Android, as May's similar report showed that the majority of users used the older Android 1.6 compared to the then-current 2.1 OS. Google has faced Android fragmentation as a problem and has been working to have more devices on similar version.

The pie chart was based on data collected on 14 days of Android Market access, ending on October 1. Google regularly builds the charts to help developers prioritize which OS is the most common and therefore which one their apps should support.
