Phase 2 of Nokia’s Symbian^3 phone fightback

Nokia has officially begun shipping the Symbian^3 follow up to the N8, the Nokia C7. The phone emphasizes social networking with live updates from Facebook and Twitter appearing directly on the home screen, and uses location-based services to facilitate social engagements. As with the N8, Nokia is pushing its integrated Ovi online services as the critical element in its attempt to counter the platform integration offered by Apple's iTunes/MobileMe services and Google's Android Market and associated online services.

More affordably priced, it will sit under the N8 in Nokia's lineup though is still a full-featured smartphone. The C7 ships with a still competitive 8-megapixel camera against the N8's higher-end 12-megapixel camera. Like the N8, it centers on an AMOLED touchscreen display equipped with ClearBlack designed for better visibility outdoors, although slightly smaller at 3.5-inches. The phone comes with 8GB of on-board storage, and will support microSD cards up to 32GB.

From a multimedia standpoint, the phone is capable of shooting video at 720p, and supports H.264, MPEG-4, VC-1, Sorenson Spark and RealVideo 10. Its WebKit browser will play Flash Lite videos, and its dedicated graphics processor with OpenGL2.0 enables 3D gaming. It also supports video calling over 3G. Music fans will also appreciate its support for a wide range of current digital audio formats including MP3, WMA, and AAC.

The C7 should be available in the US before the end of 2010 at an unsubsidized $430.
