Qualcomm gets big boost in Q3 from CDMA iPhones
Qualcomm's summer results will reflect a major uptick in orders for a CDMA iPhone, Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair said in a note today. He saw "meaningful order strength" towards the end of the calendar quarter that was attributed directly to Apple orders for chipsets. Ordering for the iPhone and others would continue to be "solid" through the fall.
The statements weren't separately corroborated by Qualcomm, but current rumors have Apple starting production late this year for a launch early in 2011. Most chip manufacturers see a process of several months between orders, production and initial shipping.
Despite the rumored iPhone influence, Qualcomm is still depending more on Android and was said by Blair to be reaping the benefits of surges in Android market share. Its Snapdragon processors run most HTC phones and those from a handful of others, and more is expected as there have been "significant" wins, the analyst said. A small amount of tablet orders were also in progress. [via Barron's]
