Adobe AIR for Android now ready
Adobe today fulfilled the second half of its mobile Flash strategy by launching AIR for Android. Like on the desktop, the implementation allows Flash apps outside of the browser that can behave more like native code. The feature needs Android 2.2, as with Flash 10.1 itself, and has a download independent of the apps themselves.
The software is a potential advantage for Google's attempts to drive Android development as it gives developers an easier approach to porting apps written for iOS, other smartphones and desktops. Adobe's Flash CS5 supports creating apps out of Flash for different platforms, but most create fully native code and often need optimizations. AIR could sometimes let an app work as-is if it doesn't need substantial integration with the particular OS.
Apple so far hasn't addressed reasons for disallowing AIR specifically but is likely to continue declining it for the same concerns of performance and stability as before. Company chief Steve Jobs has also expressed a concern about a lowest common denominator effect where developers don't properly use native iOS features and aim only for what will work with every device.
