Acer may make dual-OS standard with dual-core netbooks

updated 02:30 am EDT, Thu October 7, 2010

Acer Aspire One may have dual OS as par for course

Acer plans to make dual OS netbooks a standard choice for every netbook running a dual-core processor in the future, tipsters near the company said Thursday. While the addition of Google's OS to the Aspire One D255 is limited to areas like Acer's native Taiwan, it would be a standard feature later on. Since the OS is cheap enough to easily add, it won't cost extra, Digitimes was told.

Android has been explored as a second OS by Acer and other netbook designers as a way of providing a near-instant boot but with a more advanced operating system than the usual, stripped-down Linux OS some PCs are using as a limited but faster alternative to booting Windows. Early dual-booting Acer netbooks still faced trouble, as the OS wasn't designed for a mouse and was new to running on an Atom versus the more refined ARM chipsets.
