Trillian for Mac enters public beta

updated 01:15 pm EDT, Wed October 6, 2010

Includes history viewer, social network support

Cerulean has released the first public beta of Trillian for Mac, a formerly Windows-only instant messaging app. The software presents a unifying interface for several IM networks, including AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo and Facebook. Contacts can be synced with the Trillian iPhone app as well as multiple computers via the Astra network.

New to the Mac program is an iCal-style history viewer, which shows even those conversations which took place prior to the feature's existence. Dedicated "social" windows display content from Twitter and Facebook feeds, and app events can now be displayed as Growl notifications. studiVZ chat is also newly supported. On the maintenance side, a variety of bugfixes and performance improvements have been made.

The Trillian for Mac beta is a free download from the Cerulean website. The iPhone app, however, is a $5 App Store title.

    How does this beat Adium?

Key question. Right now, to use Trillian you have to sign up (free, to be fair) with the Astra network. I can't find anything on how they use your information or who they sell it to (if anyone, but I can't help but think they do).

Adium doesn't require any of this, and is years ahead of them on development.

Unless I've missed something, I'm not seeing much in the way of compelling reasons to even TRY this, much less dump alternatives like iChat (which actually does connect to several networks, including Google and Facebook) and Adium (which connects to pretty much everything).

    too little

    2 late.

Few years ago this would have been good to have out. But not any more. Not as a pay app either.

    HAH!

This may have been big news nearly a decade ago (as I was using Trillian as far back as 2001) are they kidding?! Why now? Worst timing ever. I've used Adium for the past 5, maybe even 6, years, no thanks, if I need video I'll use iChat or one of the official clients.
