Cricket unveils Huawei Ascend as lowest cost Android phone

Cricket intros low-cost Huawei Ascend smartphone

Wireless provider Cricket on Wednesday said it will soon launch the Huawei Ascend Android-powered handset. Calling it the first low-cost Android smartphone in the US, Cricket says the phone sports a 3.5-inch, 640x240 touchscreen, Wi-Fi, a 3.2-megapixel camera and MP3 playback capability. Storage comes from microSD memory cards, and Android 2.1 is onboard.

The carrier will offer its third Android handset with a $55 per month plan that includes unlimited talk, local and international texting, 411 information, navigation, unlimited video and picture messaging and unlimited data use on Cricket's 3G network.

The device launches in mid-October for just $150 at Cricket, without the need to sign a contract. [Image via Engadget]
