Toshiba tablets coming to the US early next year

Toshiba will bring tablet PCs to the US and Japanese markets early in 2011, said a company engineer at CEATEC in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Hideo Kasuya said Toshiba tablets will also arrive in other markets, but didn't specify. The company introduced its Folio 100 last month, though this tablet may not reach the US or Japan. It was said to arrive in Europe, the Middle East and Africa instead.

Like competitors other than Apple's iPad, the Toshiba tablets will likely use the Android operating system. Samsung's Galaxy Tab and Sharp's Galapagos use the Google OS as well and were on display at CEATEC, along with the Folio 100.

The Folio 100's specs include a 1GHz, dual-core Tegra 250. It support 1080p video content over HDMI and sport a 10-inch, 1024x600 screen. There should be 16GB of internal storage as well as 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi onboard. Full-size and mini USB ports should be built-in, along with an SD card reader and a 1.3-megapixel camera.

Toshiba was once one of Microsoft's most loyal partners and had previously focused most of its handheld efforts on Windows CE and Windows Mobile, but its relatively small market share and the appearance of the iPad are believed to have pushed it towards Android. Microsoft won't have a relatively modern tablet-oriented mobile OS until Windows Embedded Compact 7 arrives in early 2011.
