NVIDIA begins building its own graphics cards

updated 02:35 pm EDT, Tue October 5, 2010

Fabrication handled in-house

NVIDIA appears to be handling the production process for some of its own graphics cards, which have been spotted at Best Buy locations. The new offerings mark a changing strategy for the company, as previous cards were assembled by partner companies using NVIDIA chips.

The lineup is reportedly limited to several GeForce models supplied solely to Best Buy. Each of the cards now carries a "built and supported by NVIDIA" label.

Despite the clear suggestion that NVIDIA is fabricating the cards in its own factories, the company admitted to HardOCP that the components are actually assembled by Chinese manufacturer Foxconn. It remains unclear if NVIDIA will continue to tighten control over production of its own graphics hardware.
