Qualcomm says mirasol already in production

Qualcomm today updated its plans for the first mirasol display devices. The company acknowledged to Engadget that the formal launch should still be in early 2011 but that the first screens are already in mass production and should ship this fall. Initial screens will usually be 5.7-inch, XGA (1024x600 or 1024x768) models.

The first devices are also now known to be "converged" devices that serve as e-readers but behave more like a tablet. Smartphones are still planned but will only come afterwards, Qualcomm said. Most details are anticipated at CES in January, when many companies reveal their plans for the early part of the year.

Mirasol is theoretically ideal for future e-reading devices and tablets as it has the very low power requirements of e-readers but is fast enough to display animations and video. Current models are limited to about 15 frames per second and a limited color range compared to LCDs. [image via GigaOM]
