Google TV gets first apps and OTA media sharing

Google today marked the impending launch of Google TV by launching a teaser page for the platform and detailing some of its first features, including apps and AirPlay-like media sharing. The app will have optimized versions of TV-friendly services such as CNBC Real-Time, NBA Game Time and Netflix, but should also have big screen versions of many familiar Android apps, such as Amazon MP3 and Twitter. Ordinary Android apps don't yet work, but the company reiterated that it's on track to switch the feature on by early 2011.

Also on tap is Fling, Google's device-to-device media sharing feature. Much like an expanded version of Apple TV, Google TV devices will use Android 2.2's "intents" to let users throw not just audio and video but websites and other actions. Google reiterated that there will be both Android and iPhone apps to steer a Google TV device without using its bundled remote.

The platform continues to focus first on integration between traditional TV and the web, with both support for Flash and HTML5 video, regular web browsing and program info from a connected set-top box. Dish Network subscribers have the option of scheduling their DVRs directly from the Google TV interface.

First devices using Google TV ship this month and should be unveiled soon, including the Logitech Revue this week and the Sony Bravia GT1 next week. A Revue should be relatively expensive compared to an Apple TV, at $179 bundled with Dish service.

    The Revue

Is probably one of the best purchases I have ever made! I first saw the Revue as a prototype at DISH Network (where I work) and knew from that day that I had to get one. It has replaced my laptop, which I never use anymore unless I am downloading music. It is great to be able to check websites and watch TV at the same time.
