Toshiba drops OLED production in favor of LCD

Toshiba quits smartphone OLED display plans

Toshiba is dropping its OLED production plans, according to sources for Japan's Nikkei BP. The newspaper claimed that there was more demand for LCD screens in mobile devices rather than OLEDs and that the electronics giant's poor earnings made it difficult to sustain the organic displays. Research and development staff for OLEDs should be transferred to the LCD panel division instead.

The company won't entirely give up on OLED development, according to the details, but would focus solely on lighting equipment. The original plan for the production line was to produce 1.5 million OLED smartphone screens each year. [via CrunchGear]
