Unboxing the Apple TV [photos]

updated 06:40 pm EDT, Thu September 30, 2010

Smaller housing, new features

Customers have begun receiving Apple's second-generation Apple TV, which has arrived on time despite rumors of a delay. MacNN has obtained one of the redesigned devices for a full review, although the unboxing has already left a few early impressions.

The new form is truly tiny compared to the first generation, measuring less than 4 inches square. Overall volume has dropped by more than 75 percent, along with the weight. Apple has also diverged from the silver color scheme of its Mac hardware. Although the small box does not scream Apple, we like how the black housing disappears among a stack of larger A/V boxes.

Setting up the Apple TV is easy and straightforward, although users will want to download Apple's latest Remote app for an iPhone/iPod touch. The iOS utility provides a virtual keyboard, which is much quicker than using the hardware remote for entering login and password information.

We will taking an in-depth look at the updated interface, integration with iOS devices, and a variety of other features that have been brought to the second-generation device.

    And....

Apple has decided the old Apple remote was PERFECT except for the size. So they've made it bigger! Didn't bother to add any buttons to it, or give it better capabilities, but it's bigger!

I had to stop using front row the second leopard came out because they screwed up the 'skip ahead' feature. Wonder if it is the same broken way on the ATV?
