Calgary Apple Store opening overshadows mall expansion

updated 01:05 am EDT, Thu September 30, 2010

200+ lined up hours ahead of 8am opening

The opening of Calgary, Alberta's second Apple Store Wednesday at Chinook Centre managed to overshadow the debut of the mall's $277 million expansion in which the store was located, with more than 200 fans lined up five hours ahead of the 8am opening and most telling local media they were there just for Apple.

This makes the fourth store in the Canadian province of Alberta; the other two stores are in the the other largest city of Edmonton. The 180,000 square foot mall expansion, which is expected to bring revenues up from $500 million to $700 million annually, has also attracted other top-flight retailers such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, all of whom also opened their stores today.

The Chinook Centre features over 200 stores and currently sees 13.5 million visitors per year. The inclusion of the Apple Store is expected to help drive revenue-per-square-foot figures up from the current $840 figure.

    Yeah

But that's because most stores don't have a legion of fanboys with nothing better to do with their time than stand in line to enter a store. You'd think it was going to only allow the first 500 in, one day only.
