CDMA pioneer Qualcomm supplying chips for next iPhone, iPad?

updated 09:40 pm EDT, Wed September 29, 2010

Apple reportedly decided on suppliers

A new report from Taiwan's Economic Daily News suggests Apple may have finalized its supplier choices for the next-generation iPhone and iPad. The sources claim Qualcomm has been chosen to build the baseband components for both devices.

The report does not directly state that Qualcomm will produce CDMA chips for the next iPhone and iPad, however the supplier is a dominant force in the CDMA chipset market. The company is currently working on components that will enable handsets to communicate with both CDMA/EVDO networks and UMTS/HSPA+ technology.

Previous reports suggest Qualcomm is already preparing to produce millions of iPhone chips for mass production, which is said to begin in December. The chipsets were believed to be connected to an updated version of the iPhone 4, however.

A CDMA-capable iPhone would enable Apple to expand US distribution to AT&T competitors Sprint and Verizon. Some analysts suggest the company could be ready to introduce a CDMA iPhone sometime early in 2011. [via AppleInsider]

    Everyone of these xperts forgets...

The AT&T contract lasts until 2011. June of 2011, to be exact. Which isn't 'early 2011'.

Any CDMA phone does not necessarily need to be destined for the USA - more like China.

Of course, what do I know in contrast to these analyst experts that are consistently .... wrong.
