Best Buy: iPad still cutting netbook sales in half

Best Buy says iPad effect severe on netbooks

Best Buy today once again took an opportunity to correct is stance on the iPad's effect on PCs at its stores. The retailer said that Apple wasn't hurting notebooks as a whole but that they ate "40 to 50 percent" of netbook sales. It didn't give out specific numbers in the remarks.

The company hoped to seize on the popularity and added that it was considering seizing on the popularity of smartphones and tablets by offering an app store of its own. It didn't say which platforms would get such stores, although Android is technically the most likely candidate. Best Buy wants to give a choice to its users, the company said.

An effect of the sort isn't as dramatic as initially suggested, which would have applied to all notebooks, but supports beliefs that iPads are curbing netbook growth. Apple's tablet is significantly more expensive than most netbooks but is also much thinner and lighter and usually lasts longer on battery. Although it uses a slower processor, the lower demands of a mobile OS also make it subjectively faster.

    All is well for Apple

Until they come out with a better netbook.
