iTunes 10.0.1 official with Ping sidebar, fixes

Apple overnight released iTunes 10.0.1 (84MB). The patch adds the previously hinted at Ping sidebar and gives listeners a way of tracking artists and friends while still looking at the iTunes library. It's also now possible to Like or Post from the library instead of just the iTunes Store.

The release otherwise emphasizes fixes. iTunes 10.0.1 fixes an issue that changed video quality depending on whether or not the on-screen controls were up; it similarly patches a crash bug which would close iTunes while interacting with album art in a separate window. Apple has resolved a flaw that would sometimes show the library and playlists as empty. Third-party support rounds out the updates and sees improved performance with unofficial visualizers as well as better compatibility with third-party iTunes sources.

The update is available for both Macs as well as 32-bit and 64-bit Windows users.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up on the new Underworld, as well as the fact that Underworld are on Ping. There are so few good bands on Ping! Once again, Apple is being a label w**** when deciding who to add a musician page for on Ping.

    Ping sidebar advertisement

I actually want to remove that Ping sidebar and keep it from coming back every time I launch iTunes. Is there a preference setting somewhere to do it?

    Ping Sidebar

I just updated iTunes. The Ping sidebar was there. I hid it, then I quit iTunes. When I restarted iTunes the sidebar did not open.

    Ping ...

Still awfully thin on the ground in terms of things to do/fun to have -- the Facebook integration they wanted to have would have helped with that a lot -- but Apple usually responds well (if slowly) to such challenges and I hope they'll put the effort in to build Ping into something great.

I don't like the name Ping, it reminds me of that pathetic excuse of a search engine called Bing, though I call it Bong, cause only after smoking a Bong could anyone be dumb enough to use Bing.
