BlackBerry Bold 9780 gets early video comparison

A newly posted preview of the yet to be announced BlackBerry Bold 9780 has suggested the phone may be much better in practice than the Torch. Quick tests by BGR support beliefs that it may be using a more recent if still 624MHz Marvell ARM chip and that the doubled, 512MB of RAM may go great lengths to improving its speed, even versus a software-upgraded Bold 9700. The 9780 boots in less than half the time of the 9700 and at least superficially isn't affected by the slowdowns that plague the Torch.

Although many of the changes for BlackBerry 6 are oriented towards touch, the testing suggests that the OS may work better on a non-touch device like the Bold. It "works great" on the 9780 overall, the site found, and left about 300MB of free RAM for apps to use. Most other changes are minor and bring a five-megapixel camera along with glossy black instead of chrome trim.

RIM is expected to wrap up work on the phone and likely announce it in October, though when it ships isn't as clear. Launches are very likely to appear first on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US as well as all major Canadian carriers.
