Scrabble becomes Amazon Kindle's first paid app

updated 12:20 pm EDT, Fri September 24, 2010

Amazon Kindle gets first paid app months later

Amazon has quietly put up the first paid, third-party app for the Kindle. EA's Scrabble has been released for both the third-generation and second-generation six-inch Kindles as well as all versions of the Kindle DX. Despite the 3G and Wi-Fi links, the app only supports single-device multiplayer and not online games.

The bookseller rolled out its app platform in the early part of the year to try and get versatility closer to the iPad but has been only modestly adopted. Apps so far have been free first-party games and sometimes built into the firmware itself. Some of the limitation has come from the device itself, as the slow e-paper screen and low-powered chip exclude anything that demands fast-moving updates.

Scrabble currently costs $5. [via iReader Review]
