Sony VW90ES brings 3D to SXRD projectors

Sony's presence at the CEDIA home theater expo started today with two new SXRD projectors, including its first 3D projector for the home. Much like a Mitsubishi equivalent, the VW90ES can output a 1080p image in frame sequential 3D with a 240Hz refresh rate fast enough to be smooth in both 3D and 2D. Although more complex, it can still put out an image at 1,000 lumens of brightness and a 150,000:1 contrast ratio.

Receiving the Elite Series tag makes the VW90ES destined for advanced home theaters and accordingly gets it home automation support through Control4, Crestron, Savant and several other systems. The projector can play at a film-native 24p and comes already supplied with a pair of active shutter glasses to see 3D from the start.

The top-end projector is currently aimed at a luxury audience and will ship in November for $10,000.

Less ambitious home theaters will have the option of the VWPRO1, a 2D 1080p projector. Its contrast ratio is lower at 85,000:1, but it makes up for this with a brighter 1,300-lumen picture. It still supports the home automation links of its premium counterpart and comes with a backup lamp to keep the projector running over its normal lifespan.

The VWPRO1 arrives earlier, near the start of October, and will cost much less at $3,400.
