iPhone cracks 1 million mark in Korea

updated 07:50 am EDT, Wed September 22, 2010

Million iPhone sales in Korea after nine months

South Korea's KT this week said it had passed one million iPhone sales after nine months of having the device in the country. The marker was passed on August 16, almost a month before the Korean iPhone 4 launch, and is known to be accelerating with the launch of the current model. KT is still trying to fulfill the now 350,000 back orders for the iPhone 4 and expects to have reached 1.2 million sales by early October.

It's unknown how the figures compare against domestic smartphones. Samsung managed 800,000 Galaxy S sales in the country by the about the same point in mid-August but hasn't said how many it has sold since.

Apple's device is nonetheless credited with sparking interest in smartphones in a country that had previously clung to traditional phones more aggressively than elsewhere. Only half a million residents had smartphones in 2009, when regulations discouraged many smartphone platforms and heavily favored local firms like LG or Samsung. Estimates will put about 4.8 million total smartphone users in South Korea by the end of 2010, more than a quarter of which will be iPhone owners.

KT considers data use one of the primary appeals of the iPhone and noted with its new milestone that owners were much more active than on other devices. iPhone users consume four times more data than on other smartphones, the carrier said.

It may take awhile for iPhone 4 sales to

surpass the Samsung Galaxy S since it got off to such a good start. It appears that Apple is going to have its hands full meeting iPhone 4 demand with all the new Apple Retail Stores opening around the globe. Lots of good problems ahead for Apple.

at 25% it may take forever

at 25% marketshare, it's currently going to take an eternity to surpass Android's installed base, because they are heading in the wrong direction.

Now if one wanted to artificially just compare one model of iPhone - the iPhone 4, with one model of Samsung - the Galaxy S, I could see the iPhone 4 surpassing Galaxy S, because Samsung isn't looking at that contest - they'll release all kinds of variants, new models, tablet versions, etc. They are just looking at overall marketshare, more so than whether they can get all their customers to buy only one model of phone.
