Sony shows new camera gear at Photokina

At the Photokina show that kicked off on Tuesday, Sony showed off many new products, chief among them a new Alpha A-series DSLR along with software updates for the NEX-series cameras. The latest Alpha A-series on display could be the company's upcoming A77 camera, which is believed to have the ability to shoot HD video in AVCHD and have an optional vertical grip. It will use a translucent mirror, like the A55 and A33, while sporting an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor.

At the press conference, the camera was said to be much more powerful than the A55. It will initially ship with a standard zoom lens and a 500mm F4G telephoto.

Seven new pre-production lenses for the NEX-5 and NEX-3 were shown off, with most if not all of them available starting next year. Sony also said it will release a firmware update about halfway through October that will bring with it autofocus for A-mount SAM and SSM lenses when connected using the LA-EA1 Mount Adaptor. A custom function will let people assign frequent functions to button, and movie recording with pre-set apertures will also be enabled.

The seven lenses include a wide fixed focal length CZ, a telephoto zoom, macro and portrait, all shipping sometime in 2011. A high-performance standard zoom G, wide zoom and mid telephone ship in 2012.

Pricing for any of the teased products have not been revealed. [via DPReview]
