Verizon to replace Droid 2 with WE, axe data fee

A leaked memo from Verizon Wireless reveals the carrier is considering axing the $10 monthly data plan on its new 3G feature phones this fall, BGR reported on Friday. This will also mean discontinuing the 3G Multimedia device category in its lineup, though existing phones such as the LG EnV 3 will still require the $10 fee. Users will now have the option of buying the QWERTY hardware keyboard-equipped devices solely with voice and text.

At the same time, BGR is also saying it came across a rumor that Verizon will phase out the Droid 2 in favor of the World Edition of the handset. When inventory of the current Droid 2 runs out, all will have the capability to roam on GSM networks around the world, though when the handset will be released remains to be seen. It has already been spotted in Verizon's inventory system.
