Pentax intros K-5 DSLR for Photokina

(Updated with US pricing) Pentax today added a new mid-range SLR to its normally low-end mix. The K-5 has the highest resolution of any Pentax camera at 16.2 megapixels and puts it into more direct contention. Its CMOS sensor can shoot between ISO 100 and 12,800 with an extreme 51,200 setting and is matched by a significantly boosted 11-point autofocusing system.

The new body can shoot at up to seven frames per second in continuous mode and has an improved multi-shot high dynamic range mode. Video works at a full 1080p at 30 frames per second. It builds in weather resistance like the K-7 and carries a three-inch, 921,000 pixel LCD for live previews.

The camera should ship in October for $1,600 as a body-only model and in a kit version with an 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens for $1,750. A new 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 lens is due at the same time for $530.

    It's a K-7 replacement

which is their top of the line DSLR; how is this suddenly a "mid-range" model? Likewise, "puts it into more direct contention."; you should really finish the sentence...

    It's a mid-range model

Because Pentax doesn't have a "Professional" model. This camera competes with the Nikon D7000/D300s, not the D700 or D3s

In the same way that most cars are more capable than their owners, so it is with dSLRs, and anyone not putting food on the table with their lenses should seriously consider Pentax. Weather sealing, in-body shake reduction, and great low light performance in a package that makes competitors look positively porcine. I'm looking forward to getting the K-5 in my hands.

FWIW, I've got a group on Flickr with more info on the K-5, including photos and discussions.
