Google preps Google Docs editing for iPad, Android

updated 12:45 pm EDT, Mon September 20, 2010

May increase practicality of tablets

Google has announced that Google Docs, its online productivity suite, will soon support editing via the iPad or an Android device. The technology should roll out during "the next few weeks," and at least allow co-editing of documents produced by others. Support for authoring is unmentioned so far. On a desktop or notebook PC, Docs users have access to form, illustration, presentation, spreadsheet and word processing tools.

The mobile upgrade is nevertheless important, as it may make the new generation of tablets more practical in a work setting. Both the iPad and upcoming Android tablets are still developing their enterprise support, although the iPad currently enjoys greater popularity and a larger selection of apps. Apple is selling an iPad version of its iWork suite, although it does not have the cloud sync capabilities of Docs.

    About freaking time

Or arguably, "too late" for many of us who sought alternatives to make up for this deficiency.

    Yes!

How dare Google not just drop everything the second the iPad was announced and update all their software with the new device, of which they would not have since Apple and Google are still in a pissing contest.

    Excellent

This is really going to put the usefulness into the iPad for a prospective buyer like me. I just hope that the new Docs runs better than it does on my 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo Mac....
