Samsung Media Hub brings movies, TV to Galaxy Tab, Galaxy S

updated 08:05 pm EDT, Thu September 16, 2010

Samsung Media Hub debuts for US Android devices

Samsung as part of its Galaxy Tab unveiling we attended tonight kicked off the launch of Media Hub, a companion video store for its devices. The initial version will offer movies and day-after TV shows from NBC, Paramount, Universal and Warner, with more expected later. Content is DRM-protected but can be shared between five phones or tablets.

Downloads will work over both 3G and Wi-Fi and can start playing once enough is on the host device.

The store will be a staple feature of the Galaxy Tab and should be pushed to all Galaxy S phones as an over-the-air update.

Samsung has been increasingly intent on following an Apple-like model of running its own content stores alongside its devices and so far has already had its custom Samsung Apps store running on several platforms, such as its own Bada phones. Media Hub is its first true venture into non-app content and reflects a desire to have a complete ecosystem in place like that on the iPad and iPhone.

    My question is...

Can they afford to run their own store? It's rather expensive for even Apple to do. Apple has been doing it for years with iTMS which is the number one digital media store and the best they can claim is "break-even".

Since Samsung is doing push content, maybe Apple will soon offer it. Apple has to find some practical consumer use for that Maiden N.C. data center.
