Galaxy Tab extras: Wi-Fi only coming, Canadian models, no 4G

updated 09:30 pm EDT, Thu September 16, 2010

Samsung Galaxy Tab will have Wi-Fi model, Rogers

Samsung at the New York City event to bring out the US Galaxy Tab provided a few extra details of its plans for North America. It now says there are definite plans to release a Wi-Fi only model in the country. No pricing or timeframe was given to Electronista other than "soon."

Even with talk of a WiMAX version, though, Samsung also dismissed any plans for a 4G Galaxy Tab on Sprint. The official Sprint specs list only 3G.

Canadians haven't been excluded, as Bell and Rogers have already said they plan to have their own versions of the Android 2.2 tablet by the end of the year. Their versions are expected to be identical in hardware to the AT&T version, since they share the same 3G frequency bands.

At least in the US, however, Samsung said the American version will have the cellular voice calling stripped out. The reasons aren't known, though US carriers may be eager to avoid losing potential revenue from separate cellphone and tablet data plans. Europeans are more likely to buy devices off-contract or unlocked and wouldn't be as affected.
