Galaxy Tab shows up on Amazon UK for $1,063

As predicted earlier, Samsung's Galaxy Tab will be priced at significantly higher than its main competitor, Apple's iPad. The Galaxy Tab has shown up in an Amazon UK posting, revealing its price to be 680 with VAT, or about $1,063. The device in question uses a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, matching the iPad's in terms of clock speed, and gets a 3G data radio, Bluetooth 3.0 and Android 2.2. It has 16GB of storage space and a 7-inch LCD, slightly smaller than the iPad's 9.7-inch display.

In comparison, the most similarly equipped iPad model, a 16GB model with 3G, lists at the equivalent of $827 after tax at Apple UK's online store. The (equivalent) $236 difference may prove an obstacle as it involves sacrificing the larger screen. The iPad mostly struggles in extras, as it lacks Bluetooth 3.0, front and rear cameras or a built-in memory card slot.

Despite the Amazon listing, ship dates for the Galaxy Tab in the UK remain unknown. Samsung has said the tablet will be available in parts of Europe as soon as this week and is expected to have a US debut tomorrow with shipments in the next few weeks.

    You get

what you pay for. Totally worth it for all that Android goodness.

Wrenchy, we all know that you are anti-Apple. Go find another place with this kind of attitude, please.

This device is overpriced, looks ugly to me, has smaller screen. I don't know why do I need Bluetooth on the iPad. Front camera would make sense, but I have an iPhone 4 for that. Also iOS roks! Also don't forget only Apple devices work perfectly with Macs. That's what I have. No need for any PC.

So, wrenchy, have you pre-ordered the Galaxy Tab yet?

I can just hear the groans from all the

Android cheapsters since it costs more than the most expensive iPad. I don't know if the Samsung is worth it or not but that depends on the buyer, not me.

The Galaxy Tab might still be in trouble if Apple releases a 9.7" iPad v2 with front and rear facing cameras and sits at the top of line at the same price where the present 64 GB, 3G model sits.

    most likely Samsung

will drop its price should Apple decide to compete. A pretty bizarre strategy since people mostly remember the highest price or the lowest price of anything, whatever is to their advantage. Seems these "suppliers" on the Pac Rim are smoking some nasty stuff.

OMG. That is one freakishly expensive tablet. This won't be cannibalizing netbook sales any time soon...

    2.7 inches - slightly small???

nice. At that rate of comparison, a 5 inch Dell Streak is "just a little smaller" than the iPad.

So with a 13 inch MBP I should not complain as it is just 2.4 inches smaller than the 15.4 inch MBP I am currently using.

For some reason the author's math is screwed.

    re: Pricing is wrong

Indeed, comparisons can only be made between UK product pricing, that would still make the GSM 16GB Tab about equally expensive as the 64GB wifi iPad. The argument that Apple is overpriced is totally busted, Android scattered the competition so they can't benefit the same economy of scale that Apple has.

    iPad Camers

iPads are flying off the shelves in the thousands to hospitals, restaurants, and businesses who specifically don't want a camera for security reasons. Or, if they don't care, they certainly have no use for one as an order taker, or record keeper.

My guess is a camera laden version will be a new model altogether.

Google Warns: Android is inadequate for tablets

For those who are not aware of the inadequacy of using Android for iPad ripoffs, enjoy this article:

Android apps on the Galaxy Tab may be 'a little ugly'

This is going to be a particularly messy bloodbath. Don't ask me to mop up after you Samsung!
