Nokia attacks Apple, sells 260,000 phones every day

Nokia goes after iPhone claims at Nokia World

Nokia executive VP Niklas Savander used much of his presentation at Nokia World today to criticize Apple, downplay Google and boast of questionable sales figures. He claimed that people bought 260,000 Nokia phones each day during the summer, or more than "Apple and Android combined." The figure is expected to grow as the N8 is poised to move over 50 million devices alone in its total lifespan.

The claim is dubious. Google has stated that it activates 200,000 new Android devices every day, almost all of which are smartphones. Apple, meanwhile, activates 230,000 iOS devices each day. While a significant number of these are iPads and iPod touch players, the largest percentage of activations remains with the iPhone, giving the combination of Apple and Google a lead over Nokia even when discarding non-phone devices.

Despite the error, Savander was confident enough to attack both rivals. He accused Apple's Scott Forstall of copying Nokia's "connecting people" slogan in the promo video for the iPhone 4 and said the slogan wasn't just a "feel-good tagline" for his company but "our mission, our passion." The VP went on to take a potshot at the iPhone 4 antenna by claiming the N8 and other smartphones would always perform "no matter how you hold them."

He insisted Ovi Maps trumped Google Maps Navigation for GPS services since its use of offline map caching meant it was better suited to real use. However, he inaccurately claimed that only Ovi Maps had turn-by-turn walking navigation, not having paid attention to the release last week of Walking Navigation on Android.

Regardless, Savandar was unapologetic and said Nokia was "not going to apologize" for not resembling Apple or Google, although he simultaneously admitted that Nokia had lagged behind others in the industry.

"Nokia's going through a tough, challenging transition and we have a lot more work to do," he said. "But we have laid the foundation for success. I recognize that we haven't been as competitive as we want to be in smartphones. Well, that's about to change. Today, we shift in to high gear in Nokia's fightback in smartphone leadership."

The company faces an uphill struggle to maintain even the numbers that Savander mentioned. Nokia is still bleeding market share both in smartphones and in phones as a whole, much of it directly to the iPhone and Android hardware. Nokia's departing mobile leader Anssi Vanjoki asserted at the event that Nokia had "invented the smartphone," but since 2007 it has been late to most of the additions that have defined the smartphone landscape, such as multi-touch, an advanced web browser and a simple, unified mobile app store. Most of its catch-up efforts are occuring today, with both the imminent N8 release as well as the releases of the C6-01, C7 and E7.

    Sure, Nokia makes more phones...
    BUt, to get those numbers, Nokia must be counting the cheap, throw-away phones people get for "free" with their phone service contracts.

    It's like companies who count phones sitting in warehouses in their total sales figures.

    What a bunch of jackasses...

    Don't they even have a clue as to why the shareholders wanted to lynch the former CEO. Selling $25 cellphones to third-world countries isn't really going to cut it. The company got nice and fat and overconfident. Then all of a sudden the iPhone emerged on the mobile scene and completely changed what users expected from smartphones and cellphones in general. The days of the Matrix had ended and Nokia got caught with it's pants down. I'm not sure where all this arrogance of selling millions of cellphones a week comes from. When a company's share price constantly goes down and a company that size is losing more than a percent of market share a quarter, it means something has gone seriously wrong. Throwing around empty figures doesn't mean a thing if you don't have the revenue to back it up. Do they really think shareholders care exactly how many cellphones are sold when the stock has cratered? I doubt it.

    Nokia still sells

    more phones than anyone else on the planet. That's a fact whether you like it or not.

    Not the same market

    Apple don't want to sell the same phones as Nokia or as many.
    They want to sell quality Smart Phones, not piles of cheap handsets.
    Yet another company reacting badly because they are losing market share in the high end.

    Nokia vs. Apple

    I have no doubt Nokia sells more "phones" than Apple but in regard to "SmartPhones" I'm skeptical.

    I still have my 2320 GoPhone as a backup, it's a great little phone. I think Nokia makes the best "phones" but I would never buy another one of their SmartPhones--I had a 6600, a symbian-based smartphone. It was a piece of junk.... dead pixels, app crashes, and terrible customer service.

    If I had to buy a non-Apple smartphone, I'd go BlackBerry before Nokia or Android.

    Still clueless

    Both Nokia and Microsoft suffer from the same problem, AppleEnvy. They spend their time attacking, which if your in a position like Google/Android can make sense, rather than just shutting up and getting down to business. Attacking iPhone and Android makes no sense, you're not going to convince anyone of anything. Rather, they need to come out with compelling products that stand on their own. If the only positive thing they can say about their strategy and products is to point out the negatives of their competitors, they are doomed.

    Tougher competition

    Nokia is bleeding market share even in the feature phone market. I have been a regular traveller to India and Nokia ruled that market. They sold many phones there. On my recent visit about 12 days back, I saw a sea of change. Many are buying smartphones from Apple, Samsung etc. but most are now switching to Chinese phones. The good thing about these Chinese phones are:

    1. Really priced low - Rs. 2000 Rs. 3000 ($40 - $60)
    2. Dual SIM option.
    4. Internet connectivity.

    What more do you want. My friend's wife had a phone called 'bling'. It looks cool and much better than the junk Nokia makes.

    Nokia, the Chinese are coming and will burn you out in the feature phone market. Better start to go back to your core business - logging.

    "Nokia’s going through a tough, challenging transition" but that does not match the "We started all this great stuff" comment earlier...

    Nokia sells more phones but Apple makes WAY MORE $$ profit that Nokia in total phone sales.

    So, sell more, make much less.... sounds like a plan. :-)
