Microspot releases new v6 edition
Microspot Ltd., makers of various CAD programs for the Mac, have announced 25th anniversary editions of MacDraft Professional and MacDraft Personal Edition v6, major new versions of the original MacDraft program first released in 1985 to compete against Apple's MacDraw.
The original program, first produced by a company called Innovative Data Design, was later acquired by Microspot, a company headquartered in Maidstone, England, and has been available as a leading Mac-native 2D design, drafting and and technical illustration package ever since.
The v6 edition boasts new palettes adapted from one of the company's other CAD programs, Microspot Interiors, allowing for faster and easier multiple-library access, integration with iPhoto and new image-processing controls. The Layers Palette has been redesigned to allow for easier manipulation of multilayer documents.
The program also boasts a new coordinate system to be more accurate, and with it a new file format to allow for future expansion -- allowing drawings to be 10x larger than the previous version (14 feet 10 inches -- or 4.5 meters -- square). Resolution has been rescaled to accommodate modern, higher-resolution monitors, and users can create custom scales as well.
Other features include undoable merging of layers, exporting images in a variety of formats, canvas controls, border controls, better DWG/DXF import and export, warnings when text will not fit inside the specified box, modification of some controls (like option-drag) to follow more closely the custom in other design programs, and a new customizable toolbar.
MacDraft Personal Edition has also been updated to support up to five layers and most of the aforementioned improvements (apart from increased "paper" size). A comparison chart of the two editions is available on Microspot's website.
The new editions are available direction from Microspot, priced at $349 for the Professional Edition and $129 for the Personal Edition. Upgrades from Professional Edition v5.6 are $89; upgrading from other v5 editions costs $149, or any previous version for $199.
Personal Edition upgrades to v6 from v5.6 cost $55, or from any previous version for $69.
