Walmart Family Mobile launches with Android

Walmart today said it would start up its own subscription cellphone service. Family Mobile is run on T-Mobile's network but will focus on simple plans: a core plan for $45 per month gives both unlimited US voice and messaging. Only a small amount of data will be free, but prepaid data bundles known as WebPaks will add more; 1GB of data will cost $40 but will last as long as it's needed, giving light data users a way of saving money.

The plan will contrast sharply with T-Mobile's prepaid services, Common Cents and Straight Talk, by offering smartphones. Its best starting device will be the Motorola Cliq XT, which while old for T-Mobile will drop to $250 without a contract at Walmart. Most will still be basic phones and should cost as little as $35 for a Nokia model.

Service should start next week. [via AP]
