Panasonic Micro Four Thirds pro cam to ship in December

Panasonic AF100 detailed for Japanese launch

Panasonic today provided the first solid launch details for the first Micro Four Thirds camcorder. Called the AF105 in Japan, the previously revealed AF100 is due to reach its home country in December for the equivalent of $9,974 for a body-only version. The choice of MFT for the camera mount keeps extra costs low for videographers, who can use off-the-shelf lenses from Panasonic, Olympus and third parties.

The use of a mirrorless pro design gives it a large sensor like other pro cameras but the flexibility for shots that are normally expensive or impractical at this level, such as very shallow depth of field. It shoots H.264/AVCHD at up to 1080p30 (or 1080i60) and brings features that previously haven't been seen with MFT cameras, such as HD-SDI output, XLR audio input with Dolby Digital support and timecode layers. Storage is still the commonplace SD (up to SDXC cards) but uses two slots to extend the recording time.

Panasonic has yet to say when the AF100 variant will reach the US and its similar AF101 version will reach Europe, but the timing may push the American debut to 2011. [via Impress]

    NICE!

See, this is exactly what I was talking about a couple weeks ago when I saw Canon announcing a 'pro' video camera with a cheap lens... I couldn't fathom any uses for it and wondered why they didn't make video camera style bodies that hold still camera lenses...

Hopefully Canon will follow suit and make their own. Then they might find the same people who bought a 5D and all the lenses upgrade to a body suitable for video
