HTC Droid Incredible to switch to LCDs in late September

updated 10:45 pm EDT, Mon September 13, 2010

Droid Incredible jumps from AMOLED to LCD in Sept.

HTC's Droid Incredible will make the planned switch from AMOLED to LCD by the end of the month, a Verizon memo showed tonight. Any unit of the Android hot seller sold from the end of September onwards should use a Sony LCD. The note spotted by an Android Central forum goer notes that anyone who bought an AMOLED version and needs a replacement will get one with the same display.

The swap in screen technology was prompted by a shortage of Samsung displays needed to keep using AMOLEDs across HTC's lineup. The Samsung Galaxy S' dependence on four-inch Super AMOLEDs has left almost every other phone maker with no choice but to use LCDs to maintain a healthy supply. HTC has already made a similar change with the new Desire revision reaching US Cellular and Canada's Telus.

Compared to an AMOLED, the LCD loses the sheer saturation and contrast ratios but gains sharpness and overall color accuracy. Samsung's AMOLEDs use a PenTile layout that shares green pixels and gives a similar resolution to an LCD while letting more light through, albeit with a "fuzzy" look that the traditional Sony LCD avoids.
