Philips AC-powered display promises cheaper OLEDs

updated 03:50 pm EDT, Fri September 10, 2010

Philips develops AC-powered OLED lamp

Engineers at Philips Research has created what it's calling the first OLED module that is powered directly by a home's traditional AC outlet. The move could be a significant step towards wider adoption of OLEDs, as they would no longer require a large power management circuit to switch over from DC. Eliminating the power source makes the OLED products simpler, less expensive to manufacture and more flexible in how they can be used.

OLED displays are usually more thinner and power-efficient since the pixels themselves generate the light and don't need a backlight. They're also flexible for pure lighting, as they can produce colors other than whites. Philips is encouraged by AC-powered LEDs being released into the market and wants to see the same for OLEDs.
