Netflix makes deal with Nu Image for early streaming movies

Netflix lines up next deal for movies from pay TV

Netflix scored another coup for its Internet streaming today as it struck a deal to get movies from Nu Image and partner Millennium Films. The plan gives access to the same studios behind The Expendables and Righteous Kill (pictured), and will let Netflix start streaming videos in the same timeframe normally reserved for pay TV channels. While it would have the movies show a few months after their DVD appearances, it would improve the timing compared to other channels, which might have to wait for years.

The first movies confirmed to be subject to the deal are Son of No One, a major title with Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche and others that should arrive next year, and Elephant White, which will have Djimon Hounsou and Kevin Bacon.

Netflix has been making a string of such deals in the past few months, including Epix and Relativity. The service still depends mostly on its physical rentals but has faced stiff opposition from larger traditional movie studios that want to safeguard their traditional movie businesses. Direct deals with the smaller, individual studios gives them the rights without facing delays they might otherwise encounter. Netflix is increasingly the dominant Internet video service and has its footprint on virtually every platform, even including the new Apple TV.
