Kno tablet confirmed for end of year, gets cash injection

updated 03:15 pm EDT, Wed September 8, 2010

Kno will bring dual-screen tablet in 2010

The investors and others behind the 14-inch dual-screen tablet called the Kno haves revealed some more information on the device recently. It will be "the most powerful tablet anyone has ever made," according to investor Marc Andreessen. Meanwhile, the company CEO, Osman Rashid, said the device will ship before year's end, though didn't elaborate. The company has just secured another $46 million in investments to help bring the tablet to market this year.

Rashid also confirmed that it will cost less than $1,000. The device is also promised to bring with it software support and services, which could mean downloadable apps. Aimed at college students, it will allow them to view textbooks at or near full size. Note-taking and drawing on the pages will be possible as well.

Kno's Webkit-based software will also let students view those same textbooks on their desktops and notebooks. When not reading textbooks, users can browse the net over the Wi-Fi connection. The digital textbooks will also cost less than their physical equivalents, but cannot be resold after a course is completed.

As previously noted, the Kno tablet is expected to run on a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra chip, but if the most powerful tablet claim is to be believed, it needs to be faster than the 1GHz common to all dual Tegra designs so far. [via TechCrunch]
