Google launches Google Instant: search as you type

Google Instant provides live, dynamic search

Google at its special event today rolled out Google Instant, its codename for a live, as-you-type search. The method provides results on the fly and auto-suggests search queries based on the exact characters. It makes predictions based on past searches and automatically pops up specially formatted information for common searches, such as weather, movie info and images.

The method isn't new on the desktop, such as in Spotlight on a Mac or the Start menu in Windows, but should help users find what they want before they've finished their results, Google said.

Instant needs a modern browser with AJAX and is launching today in the US and Canada for users of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. Europe and Russia should get the update in coming days. A mobile version for Android, iPhone and other devices is still in development but should come in the fall.

A bit strange on the video presentation. Can't lay my hand on it. It's like somewhere between Apple product presentation and MadTV (or The Onion Video). Also this search method already appears on Apple site long ago. It's not like a "Wow Factor" thing. Maybe for the total geeks it is.

    This changes everything, again.

    Thank you Google.

    No thanks

Call me old fashioned, but I don't like to be "predicted" or second guessed by a script. Trying to outsmart users highly irritates me. I want to shown what I'm looking for, not pages of lists of c*** I'm not.

This is the one reason I won't use Safari. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is opt-outable.
