iPhone 4 gets Chinese network license

updated 11:30 am EDT, Wed September 8, 2010

Could pave way for imminent launch

The iPhone 4 has been approved for a network access license in China, Dow Jones notes. The news comes by the country's Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center, which posted the information on its website. Spokespeople for Apple and local carrier China Unicom have so far declined to comment.

The decision should clear the way for the two companies to begin selling the iPhone 4 in the near future. Officially China Unicom has said it expects the device to go on sale sometime this year, but recent reports have pointed to a September 16th launch, or possibly even one on the 15th. The carrier is also thought to be prepared to sell the iPad in the next few months.
