GM is reportedly planning on expanding its OnStar services to include new content offered for free, unnamed sources have told Bloomberg. The upgraded system is said to be linked to social networks such as Facebook, with speech automatically converted to text. It is unclear if GM has overcome the accuracy issues associated with some voice-to-text technology.
Aside from the social networking integration, OnStar is also expected to get new entertainment and information content that interacts with the user's smartphone. The services appear to be GM's answer to Ford Sync, a competing service that combines entertainment features with cellphone and media player integration.
The OnStar upgrade is allegedly set to for launch sometime later this month, although the Facebook feature will be initially limited to a test audience while GM decides if it will be fully deployed.
