Apple UK points to iOS 4.1 launching Sept. 8

iOS 4.1 gets release date through Apple UK

Apple's British site has revealed that iOS 4.1 is likely to be posted on September 8. Where the US site only lists the refresh as "coming soon," the UK page has an exact date. The reason for the discrepancy isn't clear, though it's suspected that the new iPod touch will be available at the same time.

The iOS 4.1 update brings visible upgrades like HDR photography support, Game Center, HD video uploads and TV show rentals, but it should also address a number of well-known issues with the original 4.0 release. iPhone 3G users will get a major performance boost that eliminates the excessive slowdown, while iPhone 4 owners should see corrections to the overly sensitive proximity sensor. Bluetooth should be both refined and add AVRCP support to allow direct control of audio over the wireless link.

Only iPhones and iPods will initially get the update. iPads will have to wait until the iOS 4.2 update in November to get both 4.1 and earlier 4.0 features.

    also FaceTime

Also, iOS 4.1 will change the Facetime registration system, because iPod touches don't have phone numbers so a new method of reaching people is now needed.

    Facetime....

Facetime is a device detection type thing all ready built into the OS. For example, a contact on the iPhone, has the name, photo, numbers, emails etc, then at the bottom is "text message" "facetime" and "share contact". I imagine all it really is, is a modification to the contacts framework that adds the facetime button, i imagine on an itouch its going to be email, facetime, share contact. Since i have barely used an iTouch, i'm not sure how it is laid out now, but it wouldnt take some massive change to implement a feature that only requires a camera to work on a device it all ready runs on

    Facetime....

I don't understand why this is going so far.... All cell phones, for the past 5 years here in Japan, have front cameras and can place video calls. I only have the 3Gs but my friend has the 4 and says it works with all phones in Japan. She can video call her husband who doesn't have an iPhone and doesn't have the same carrier. So when I heard Steve talk announce Facetime a while back, it made me a little upset when he said that it is the first cell phone to make video calls.
As for 4.1, hasn't it been out for a while now? I have had it for some time now.... and no, I'm not talking about 4.0.1, 4.1. This new one won't let you delete the built in, apple apps like gamecenter and such. I had them out in 4.0.1 and when I went to 4.1, it put it all back in and when I jiggle the apps, there are no "x" on it to take it out.
