Apple manufacturers churning out 2 million iPads per month

updated 10:40 am EDT, Fri September 3, 2010

Number could ramp up to 3 million by end of 2010

Apple has greatly ramped up iPad production in the past few weeks, says Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. Manufacturing partners are now said to be delivering 2 million iPads per month, double recent levels. The increase is likely the explanation behind current iPad shipping times, which have plummeted from 7 to 10 days to within 24 hours. Even the iPhone 4 is still suffering from three-week delays.

Still greater plans may be in store, says Huberty. Apple is allegedly telling suppliers it would like to step up to 3 million iPads per month in the fourth quarter of the year. At that rate the company would build at least 36 million iPads during 2011, although production would have to increase still further to meet a supply chain forecast, sitting at about 40 million units.

    I'll say it first

Holy c***. Did any analyst have any idea Apple might sell THIS many iPads? I'm an Apple fanboy and they've already passed as many as I thought they'd sell over the rest of the year. Can't wait to see what the final count for 2010 will end up being.

I attend one of the largest universities in California, and the iPads are definitely trickling in... Netbooks are still #1 but the ipad is becoming more and more common.

    F*cking wonderful news...

When the iPad was introduced, I never thought it would be this popular because the form factor was unusual and I figured the average consumer wouldn't take to it because it was different. I just figured it seemed practical because it ran so fast and had terrific battery life and with a huge app library and lots of media content, how could it not be useful. Still, I figured 7 million units would be the maximum for 2010 even with global sales. I thought it would be popular in Europe. No way I thought it would be near 10 million+ units. That's just totally unexpected. Steve Jobs confidence blitzed the computer industry with that ultra-high risk tablet gambit. No other company would have taken that sort of chance or could afford to.
