Nikon president hints again at mini pro camera

Nikon still sees camera between compact and DSLR

Nikon president Makoto Kimura in a new interview has dropped hints again at an in-between camera. He told Reuters the company wanted a camera "different from SLRs and compacts" and hoped to create a new category. It wouldn't be like typical mirrorless models, although Kimura wasn't clear on whether it would still be mirrored or occupy a pro point-and-shoot space like the Canon G11.

The camera is still thought to be on track for a launch before the end of Nikon's fiscal year ending in March. With virtually no leaks so far, the camera is unlikely to show at the Photokina camera expo on September 21 and may instead wait for next year.

Mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses have been a significant threat to Nikon's established business as they often provide much of the same image quality as its entry-level DSLRs but in a smaller and sometimes less expensive format. The company has partly responded with video-heavy cameras like the D3100 but hasn't had a direct challenger. [via Nikon Rumors]

They Better get of the Pot...

I just went to the CANON EXPO 2010 in NYC, and they showed the most unbelievable Upcoming Working Prototypes of the future that I have ever seen. I think soon we are all going to be saying Nikon Who? In no time at all.
