iTunes 10 adds 'Ping' social networking feature

updated 03:15 pm EDT, Wed September 1, 2010

Users can follow artists, friends

Alongside Apple's new iPod unveilings, the company has introduced a major update to iTunes. Version 10 focuses on social networking with a new "Ping" feature. Users can now follow favorite artists and friends, listen to previews of music they like, or view tour dates. Status updates and media uploads work in a similar way to networks such as Facebook.

The update also allows users to rent television episodes in HD quality for $0.99 each, instead of requiring an outright purchase for $3. Rentals can be watched on a computer, iOS device, or the new Apple TV hardware.

Aside from the rental changes and Ping, v10 features a hybrid list view that takes five or more songs from the same album and groups the titles together with album art. The logo has also been changed, eliminating the CD in favor of a music note.

iTunes 10 will be available soon as a free download for Mac or Windows systems.

    Re: No it's not

    They said 'soon', not "now!".

And there ain't nothing here worth the effort in upgrading (unless you're still waiting for some bug fixes from 9.1).

    Correction to be noted here:

Steve did say that it (iTunes 10) will be available today right around the 50 min 10 second mark of the broadcast.

Some last minute thing must be holding it up... and you're correct in saying that unless bug fixes are corrected in 10, there's no need to jump in and download it.

As of 5:35PM EST it's still at 9.2.1

    @ Gazoobee

Totally agree with you. In fact in one site I skipped the headline because I didn't realize it was all about iTunes.

Perhaps Apple wants to distance from the CD concept and replace it with a blue sphere and silver border. Worse the Musical note becomes black and its now LIMITED within the sphere losing much of the crisp and vibrance.

Overall it emanates a different feel or perhaps even --sorry to say-- bad omen. I heard there is a logo feng shui that states that it is not good for logos to have frames or borders because it foretells the product or service's limited potential or success.

Apple should give this a second look.

That's exactly what was intimated during the presentation as CD's are becoming less in sales volume. Replacing it with the simpler logo is a better representation and since it's over 10 years since it had a redesign, it was time to replace it.

Never mind telling me that the color of the notes changed in the icon... already aware of that.

iTunes was originally called "SoundJam MP" and was purchased from Casady & Greene back in 2000 and the lead programmer was hired on to oversee the transformation of it into iTunes. I could be wrong on the year of purchase, but I had purchased a copy of "SoundJam" at MacWorld NYC in 1999. It was far better than anything out there at the time and is still a pretty damned good player in its incarnation as iTunes.

Now, at least, the download page says "Download iTunes 10" but still actually serves up iTunes 9.2.1 when I checked about 10 minutes ago (10:45PM EST)... *sigh*
