Update brings new social networking features

Apple has released iTunes 10, a major update to the media utility that was introduced today alongside several new iPods. The update features a social networking feature, Ping, that allows users to follow friends and artists. Users can post music they like, concert attendance, genre interests, and a variety of additional information.

New terms for TV show rentals now allow HD episodes to be rented for $0.99, rather than requiring users to pay $3 for an outright purchase. Version 10 also brings support for AirPlay, a wireless standard for wireless music distribution through home theater equipment.

iTunes 10 is now available as a free download for Mac or Windows systems.

    Gray icons

My first impression was that the new all-gray icons are really sad-looking, not to mention harder to tell apart. I'm not impressed with the new look.

It looks like c***. Give me a break apple. You could have done so much more. Its all washed out. Very painful to look at.

I don't mind the look so much, but this Ping thing...just more c***.

Or maybe it's just me being an old geezer.

    Have to agree..

That all-grey look it simply too hard to tell apart. SOmeone in the design department should get their a** on the move and find another job!

    Medicated UI

I'm hating the monochromatic color scheme. It's reminiscent of the flat, boring Snow Leopard Icons. I use CandyBar to rectify that, but this is dreadful. I could hack it, but what a pain in the butt.

The new list view with album covers for tracks from the same recording is an okay idea. However, the cut off at 4 tracks is awful. Have they never heard of symphonies, string quartets, sonata-allegro form? 1 work, consisting of 4 movements? My iTunes library has nearly every other recording with a blank space. Nice call on that one, Apple. Back to list view...

    Ping? Ho hum...

Is there much different between AirPlay and what you could do with an Airport Express and iTunes?

And is this an iTunes-only technology or can any company use it (say some third-party music player app, or even Windows Media Player)?

And how many people do you think can't wait to buy all new stereo equipment so they can stream their music directly to those boxes. I would think it would be so much cheaper to just get the router...

    gray icons

Maybe this is Steve's way of telling us he was right all along by putting a B&W monitor in the original 128K Mac!

But doesn't it kind of become inconsistent with the other apps in OS X that have color icons on their sidebar?
