Canon shows 4K video camera prototype, more

At its invitation-only Canon Expo 2010, an event that is held once every five years and travels around the world, Canon showed off some advanced future products. Among the gear showed off, some of which was covered elsewhere, was the Multipurpose Camera prototype that has a 4K resolution and a new CMOS sensor that lets users shoot videos at more than 60 frames per second. That 2/3-inch, eight-megapixel sensor is attached to a 24-480mm zoom lens (35mm film equivalent) that has 20x optical zoom and apertures from f1.8 to f3.8.

This lens is powered by a newly developed electronically-controlled lens drive system. Canon even employed bio-based plastic in the exterior components of the camera to replace petroleum-based pieces.

Also not covered before is Canon's future Cross Media Station (CMST), though little details on this are known. It involves a central media platform in the living room that will bring up content from Canon devices such as videos and still images using an HDMI cable.

When these products arrive in stores remains to be seen, and could be years away. [images via Philip Bloom]
