Ultimate Ears intros custom in-ear monitors

Logitech's audio group Ultimate Ears has teamed up with EMI Music'Capitol Studios to release the first custom In-Ear Reference Monitors. The headphones are said to have a flat response curve that's natural and dimensional when reproducing sound. Made for professional studio engineers and producers, they provide 32dB of noise isolation when made with an optional soft silicone material or 26dB in the acrylic housing.

Each earbud sports a woofer, mid-driver and tweeter, each individually tuned and balanced armature speakers. They have a wide band response of between 5Hz and 20kHz. Impedance reaches 35Ohms at 1kHz and an input sensitivity of 98dB SPL at 1kHz. To reduce noise in the cable and help prevent friction and tangling, a tightly-braided cable is used and that eliminates the Y-joint connector. Included is a quarter-inch gold-plated jack and a three-pole 3.5mm audio jack.

The Ultimate Ears In-Ear Reference Monitors can be ordered starting in September, priced at $999. Buyers need to get their ear impressions made by an audiologist, however, and the results sent to Ultimate Ears before their custom sets can be built.

I thought there was some pricing error. Hard for me to believe they could be all that good. My ears are c*** after many years of abuse. These in-ear monitors would be useless to me.
