Amazon Kindle to reach Staples stores this fall

updated 10:00 am EDT, Tue August 31, 2010

Amazon pushes Kindle retail to Staples

Staples today said it would be the second US retailer to sell the third-generation Kindle. The office store will carry both the six-inch Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the Kindle as well as the Kindle DX. It plans to both stock the hardware and give users a chance to try the e-readers in the store.

The smaller Kindles will be available to try in the fall and will be available with some accessories. Kindle DX readers will ship somewhat later, towards the end of the fall. All should be available at the $139, $189 and $379 prices Amazon normally charges itself.

Adding Staples gives Amazon just its second major retail presence. Until now, it could only sell in Target stores and had relatively limited exposure. Apple has one of the largest advantages as it can sell the iPad in its own stores as well as Apple resellers and Best Buy, while Barnes & Noble also has the luxury of its own stores. The Kindle is still considered the leading e-reader in the US, but the inability to try one first-hand has been considered one of its setbacks.
